The number of people living with dementia is growing. People living with dementia are all around us: at restaurants, the grocery store, our neighborhoods and work places, without us even realizing.

  • 5.2 Million individuals 65+ had Alzheimer’s in 2016
  • This number will be 13.8M by 2050
  • It takes an average of 6 to 12 years before a person dies of dementia
  • Individuals usually only live the last 2 or 3 years in a facility.

Everyone has a role to play in recognizing people with dementia as a part of their community and supporting their independence, value and inclusion. A dementia friendly community is a place where people living with dementia:

  • Are able to live good lives
  • Have the ability to live as independently as possible
  • Continue to be part of their communities
  • Are met with understanding
  • Are given support where necessary

A dementia friendly business is a supportive, prepared and knowledgeable place for people with dementia and their care partners to visit or be employed. Business benefits include:

  • Recognition as a community partner and social leader
  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • Opportunities for publicity and marketing
  • Increased employee satisfaction
  • Providing better customer service for all customers
